Verb phrases help us describe time and how an action relates to that time. The common 12-form overview combines time with simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous patterns.

The building rule

Continuous uses V4. Perfect uses V3. Simple past uses V2. Simple present usually uses V1/V5. After will, use a base form.

See it in a sentence

I write every day. → simple present

I am writing now. → present continuous

I have written a letter. → present perfect
