Past Perfect — Uses and Common Mistakes

Use the tense in a clear context and avoid common errors.

Major uses

Earlier completion: I had eaten before she called.
Past result: He was tired because he had worked all day.
Do not use past perfect for every past action; it clarifies an earlier past relationship.

Common time expressions

before, after, already, by the time, when

Common mistakes

She had went. → She had gone.
Before the guests arrive yesterday… → Before the guests arrived yesterday…

Grammar trick

Earlier past: had + V3. Later past: usually V2.

Read a connected example

The guests arrived at eight. Before they arrived, we had cleaned the house. Mom had prepared dinner. We had arranged the chairs and decorated the room.
