Past Perfect — Introduction and Verb Forms
Understand the time relationship and choose the required verb form.
Introduction
Look back from one past event to an earlier completed event. Establish two past times or a clear past reference point.
When and why
Earlier completion: I had eaten before she called.
Past result: He was tired because he had worked all day.
Do not use past perfect for every past action; it clarifies an earlier past relationship.
Formula
Subject + had + V3
Required verb form
V3 — Had works with every subject.
Examples
The family had prepared dinner before the guests arrived.
They had not finished the decorations when the guests arrived.
Ask WH questions in this tense
WH + had + subject + V3 ...?
What had she completed before the guests arrived?
Where had they gone?
Choose what, where, when, why, which, whose or how for the information needed. How many asks about countable quantities; how much about amounts; how often about frequency; how long about duration. A subject question can keep normal order: Who works here? Do not add do just because a WH word appears.
