Past Continuous — Introduction and Verb Forms

Introduction
Describe an activity in progress at a particular past time, background activity, or an activity interrupted by another event.
When and why
Past snapshot: Dad was cooking at five.
Interruption: I was reading when the phone rang.
Parallel activities: While I was cooking, Maya was studying.
Formula
Subject + was/were + V4
Required verb form
V4 — I/he/she/it/singular → was; you/we/they/plural → were.
Examples
Cindy was reading at five yesterday.
Cindy was not watching television.
Ask WH questions in this tense
WH + was/were + subject + V4 ...?
What were you doing at nine?
Where was Dad going?
Choose what, where, when, why, which, whose or how for the information needed. How many asks about countable quantities; how much about amounts; how often about frequency; how long about duration. A subject question can keep normal order: Who works here? Do not add do just because a WH word appears.
